formerly the Roadblock Release Session
Somewhere in your PhD, there is one thing you keep walking past.
The chapter you have not opened since the feedback came back. The literature review that grows every time you sit down with it. The email to your supervisor that has been in drafts for eleven days. The plan that worked on Monday and was gone by Wednesday.
The people around you see the top of it: a late draft, a missed meeting, someone who "just needs to manage time better". You are carrying the rest.
This session is one hour on that one thing. We find what is underneath it, and you leave with a plan built for the weeks you actually have, including the bad ones.
One thing, not the whole PhD
A PhD that has stalled rarely has one cause. It almost always has one thing that is heavier than the rest right now. The unopened email. The shame after a lost fortnight. The chapter that has to be right the first time, so it never gets started. The planner you bought instead of writing.
That is what we work on. One hour, one thing. We get it moving again, and you feel what that is like.
If you cannot name the thing yet, that is fine. The short form you fill in when you book asks what keeps getting pushed to tomorrow and what happens when you try to work on it. A line or two is usually enough for me to see it, and if it is not, we find it in the first ten minutes of the call.
who is it for
This is for you if
-
You are doing a PhD or research degree, and one specific thing has been stuck for weeks.
-
You have already tried the usual advice, smaller steps and a better calendar, and it slid off.
-
You want a plan that still works on the Thursday when nothing went to schedule.
-
Your capacity changes from day to day, and you are tired of plans written for someone whose capacity does not.
If your PhD doesn't run in straight lines, you're in the right place!
This is probably not for you if
-
You want someone to write the chapter for you. This is coaching, not ghostwriting.
-
You are looking for therapy. I am a coach, and I will say so if what you bring needs a clinician.
-
Everything feels stuck, and you cannot point at any one thing. If that is where you are, start with my free 20-minute PhD & Coffee Chat instead. We will find it together, and if this session is the right next step, I will tell you.
how it works
How the hour works
-
Name the thing.
After your book, you get a short form. You tell me what is stuck and what happens when you try to work on it. A line or two is plenty. If writing is the hard part, send a voice note. The whole thing takes less time than making a coffee. -
The hour.
Sixty minutes on Zoom. Camera on or off, your choice. The first part is finding what is underneath the stuck thing: what happens on a Tuesday afternoon when you open the file, and what you say to yourself as it happens. That is where most plans go wrong, so that is where we start. The rest of the hour is building the plan. -
Your plan, in writing.
Within 24 hours, you receive the plan, written to you in plain sentences. The first ten-minute step sits at the top. Underneath it: a minimum floor for the days when you have very little, a restart line for after a lost week, and if your stuck thing involves a supervisor or committee, the sentence to say to them. You do not have to hold any of it in your head. -
Seven days of support.
Plans do not stick on the call. They stick, or they do not, around day four. For seven days after our session, you can message me with a question, a win, or the wobble. I answer within a working day.
Bonuses
The Pick Three deck (€47).
All 100 PhD strategy cards. Each card has a use case, instructions, and the difficulty it is for. I mark the three that match your stuck thing, so you don't start reading all one hundred of them.
The Emotional First Aid Kit.
A six-page PDF from my Hidden Emotions, Stalled PhDs workshop. Five emotional patterns that stall doctoral work, with one practical move for each.
The Restart Call
Fifteen minutes on Zoom, any time within 30 days of your session. For when the plan has stopped, and you want to start it again without rebuilding it. Some people never need it. It is there either way.

faq
What if I can't face the form?
Then send a voice note. Two or three sentences are enough: what is stuck, and what happens when you try to overcome it. If even that feels like too much, book anyway, and we will start from zero on the call.
I feel like a fraud even calling myself a researcher. Will this expose that?
No. That feeling is one of the most common things people bring to me. I am not assessing whether you belong in your PhD. We are working on one thing so you can move again.
I'm SOOO far behind. Is it too late?
"I'm so behind" is usually a measure of how heavy the thing has become rather than how far behind you are. We cut it down to a first step you can take this week.
What if I book and then can't bring myself to show up?
Booking something and then avoiding it is a pattern I know well, and I have built around it. The form is a small commitment that makes the call easier to walk into. If the day arrives and you cannot face it, message me, and we move it. No lost payment.
Is one hour really enough?
For one thing, yer. We are getting one stuck thing moving and giving you a plan that survives a bad week. The seven days of support and the restart call are there for the part that happens after the call ends.
I've tried coaches and systems before. Why would this be different?
Most of them assume a steady supply of focus and energy. Yours comes and goes. The plan we build has a floor for the low days and a restart line for the lost ones, which is usually the part that was missing.
What if I want more support afterwards?
Some people book a second session on a new stuck thing. Some move into the three-month one-to-one program. There is no pitch during the hour. If you ask, I will show you the options at the end.
about me

I am Maria Stefanidi, a PhD coach based in Athens. I coach PhD researchers through the parts of a PhD that do not show up in a progress report: the lost weeks, the feedback you have not opened yet, the plan that worked on Monday and fell apart by Wednesday.
I build plans for variable days, because that is what most PhDs look like from the inside. I also run workshops, and I write about the hidden side of doctoral work every Sunday on LinkedIn.
The people I work with have had enough pressure. What they are missing is scaffolding and permission to do this differently. That is what we build in the hour.
one thing stuck
You do not have to keep walking past it.
You do not have to prove you are disciplined enough or wait until you feel ready. You name the thing, we spend an hour under it, and leave with a plan you can start on the same day.
One thing at a time!
