Recently, a posting of this article on Facebook http://www.guardian.co.uk/higher-education-network/blog/2012/may/24/why-women-leave-academia led to a hotly debated discussion on women in academia. With men, as well as women, identifying with the article’s themes of over-work, job insecurity and pressure. With only 12% of final year female PhD students, and 21% of male students, looking for a career in academia (down from 72% and 61% at the beginning of their studies) – what is the PhD process doing to put off so many promising researchers? As a forum for support, Beth Brockett suggested this would be a great place for students and other academics, both female and male, to share experiences (positive included!), strategies, suggestions and concerns. What attracts you to academia? What puts you off? What would make all the difference?
